Mastering these five skills will help you to succeed while working from home and also enjoy a great work-life balance.
To say that life has changed would be an understatement. With the advent of COVID-19, most of us are now working from home (often abbreviated to WFH), to varying degrees of success. And there’s talk that things are going to stay that way for many people, even after everything “gets back to normal.”
For the Rockstar employee (I’m willing to bet that’s you) that always wants to deliver excellent work, you might be wondering how you can optimize your productivity while you work from home. Here are five skills you should learn to be successful in your remote position, as well as achieve work-life balance.
Communication
Perhaps the most important skill to master if you work from home is communication. One of the advantages that a traditional workspace offers is the ability to speak to your co-worker’s face to face. You will not have that option when you are remote.
The most important thing to remember is that 70% of human communication is nonverbal. Because of this, you must communicate clearly and professionally. Review emails before you send them. Ask yourself if what you have written could possibly be understood in a way other than you intended.
It’s also vital to coordinate with your employer to see what level of reporting is required while WFH. Depending on the employer, they may ask for a daily or weekly productivity report, outlining the tasks you completed.
Self-Motivation
One thing that many people struggle with when working from home is motivation. It can be difficult for some to self-regulate. You will need the ability to motivate yourself to wake up early enough to complete your work for the day. You will also need sufficient motivation to complete that work.
Time Management
To be truly successful working from home, you’ll need to be able to create your own schedule and stick to it. You’ll also need to commit to completing a certain amount of work each day.
Discipline
Another way to be successful while working from home is to be disciplined. Once you have your schedule, stick to it. Nothing will throw you off quite like a constantly changing schedule. When you get used to the pace of your schedule, you’ll naturally settle into a steady rhythm that will help you with your work-life balance.
Computer Literacy
This may seem to go without saying, but you’d be surprised to know that this is something many workers struggle with. You’ll need to fully understand how to use a computer as well as the software you’ll be using (such as Microsoft Office Suite) to work from home successfully.
Work from Home Success
Working from home may seem like a daunting task, but if you develop the above skills, you are more likely to succeed. There are plenty of free skill-building resources available should you need them, only a simple search away.
