Recruiting for AI AGENTICS

More and more clients are asking for people who can build AI agents. But what exactly are they looking for?

THE SIMPLE EXPLANATION

·      A traditional AI/LLM application primarily responds.

·      An AI agent can reason, use tools, interact with systems, and execute multiple steps to accomplish a goal.

Think:

·      LLM (Large Language Model) = Answers the question

·      AI Agent = Takes action

WHAT SKILLS SHOULD YOU RECOGNIZE? When you see an AI Agent requirement, look for combinations of:

  • Python

  • LLMs / Generative AI

  • APIs & tool integration

  • RAG

  • Cloud platforms

  • Agent orchestration

  • Vector databases

  • LLMOps / MLOps

You may also see technologies such as LangChain, LangGraph, MCP and multi-agent systems.

DON'T SEARCH ONLY FOR "AI AGENT ENGINEER" - Strong candidates may have completely different titles:

AI Engineer | Applied AI Engineer | ML Engineer | Software Engineer | MLOps Engineer | LLM Engineer | Platform Engineer | AI Architect

The technology may be in their experience even when it isn't in their title.

THE QUESTION I WANT YOU TO ASK - When a hiring manager gives you an AI Agent requisition, don't immediately start searching.

Ask: "What does the agent actually need to DO?"

Does it need to retrieve information, make decisions, call APIs, automate workflows, interact with customers, work across multiple systems?

That answer will tell you what kind of candidate you really need.

TPG TAKEAWAY - Don't recruit the title. Recruit the capability.

Next time you receive an AI-related requisition, identify the function the technology needs to perform before you build your search.
